” For conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty.  At the attack on WESTHOEK RIDGE on 20/09/1917, he led his platoon with dash, and set a splendid example to all.  When all the Company Officers became casualties, he took command of the Company and handled his men in grand style under very trying circumstances.  All men and NCO’s of the Company speak most highly of his gallant conduct “.
