MILITARY  CROSS

Date of Recommendation : 15 April 1917

” This officer is brought under notice for his very gallant conduct in the operations on the HINDENBURG LINE  on the morning of the 11th April 1917.  He led his Platoon with great skill and courage in the initial charge , and carried his men with him  through uncut and partially cut lines  of wire into the second Objective. Here he at once set about the work of consolidation and the preparation of ramps  across the trenches, and lanes, through the barbed wire for the cavalry , which was expected to follow.  He was always to be found in the thickest of the fight , whether with Bomb or Bayonet , and was always conspicuous for his cool daring.  On several occasions he led small parties over the top and dealt with many bombers with the bayonet when they could no longer be dealt with by bombs.  When all supplies of ammunition had been exhausted and casualties had reduced numbers by about seventy- five per cent, he refused to surrender  and made a dash across “No mans land ‘  which was swept with fire  and returned to our trenches wounded.  He is very strongly recommended for high distinction “.
