Statement re. Soldier’s Death

Informant – 4771. EWENS, Pte. G. E. – 45th Battalion – ” About the 22nd February when in Reserve  I found the bodies of both CASSIDY and NOYCE about 200 yards to the left of  the commencement of Greece Trench.  Both bodies were considerably knocked about by wounds,  and CASSIDY had one of his legs  blown off.  With the help of Pte. TURNER of the 45th Battalion, since wounded, I buried the 2 bodies where I found them taking the personal belongings of each  placing them in the haversack handed in at Etaples. I was wounded shortly afterwards  and sent to No. 1 General Hospital Rouen where I took the haversack  with me.  A Medical Officer at the Hospital  advised me to take the haversack  with me to Etaples and  to hand it in there  which I did on  18 April 1917 “.
