30/01/1922– George wrote to Base Records Melbourne in response to their letter dated 10/01/1922 re. disposal of William Torrie’s War Medals. William had listed his next of kin to be his younger brother Bertram, on enlistment for war service. Extracts from George’s reply :- ” Being his oldest brother I would prefer to have his medals, etc. in remembrance of him as I was in the line with him when killed on Pozieres Ridge “.
20/02/1922– Base Records replied that William,s Medals would be forwarded to George, as they issue.
7/12/1927– Base Records wrote to George confirming recovery of William’s remains near Pozieres France. Extracts from the letter include :- ” With further reference to the report of the regrettable loss of your brother, the late No. 5207 Private W. TORRIE, 48th Battalion, I am now in receipt of advice that during the course of exhumation work in the vicinity of Pozieres the Imperial War Graves Commission was successful in recovering the remains of this soldier which have since been interred with every measure of care and reverence in Plot 13, Row J, Grave 14 of Serre Road Cemetery No. 2, situated near Beaumont Hamel where a permanent headstone of uniform design will be erected and engraved with his full regimental description and date of death, together with any verse or epitaph previously selected in the form of a personal inscription “.
