DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL
Date of Recommendation : 27 September 1918
” Soldier is brought to notice for conspicuous valour , marked initiative and devotion to duty during tho operations carried out on the 18th September 1918, between JEANCOURT and the HINDENBURG positions. During the advance to the BLUE LINE a large gap appeared between our left flank and the 3rd Australian Infantry Brigade threatening to leave both units flanks in a precarious position. Pte. WAYWOOD regardless of personal risk in the face of heavy Machine Gun fire displayed great courage and fine resourcefullness in this emergency and under most trying circumstances succeeded in bringing up the left unit’s flank , thus restoring the position. Towards the final stages of the attack two Machine Guns were serioously checking the advance and Pte. WAYWOOD under intense fire crawled up and located the exact position of these guns. On this information the guns were dislodged by his gun N.C.O and the advance was enabled to be resumed. This was done at great personal risk and proved of great value at a critical moment. This Soldier’s consistent good work in the line has been marked and on this occasion his gallantry during and after the consolidation was of the same high order. Pte. WAYWOOD is most strongly recommended for special distinction “.
