” I saw him killed at Ypres. He was in our support lines at time of casualty. A shell landed quite close to him, and killed him instantly. I handed his identity disc, paybook and private papers to the Sgt. of the Company. I saw his grave just behind place of casualty– he and others who were killed with him were buried together, and the grave was marked with a cross bearing full particulars.  I knew him very well. He came from Collie Western Australia “.
