” While in charge of a pack transport ration party proceeding to ZONNEBEKE on 20th October 1917 this NCO showed great courage.  Near ZONNEBEKE three men and one horse of his party were wounded.  Despite the continued heavy shelling he successfully delivered his rations to Company Headquarters himself personally carrying the rations from the wounded horse and leading another horse whose leader had been wounded “.
