” At PASSCHENDAELE RIDGE, N. E. of ZONNEBEKE on 12th October 1917 for his cheerfullness, gallantry and devotion to duty.  He repeatedly volunteered  as a runner, which took him through  heavy artillery barrages  and Machine Gun fire , and when many casualties were being caused by snipers.  When not thus engaged he helped to carry out wounded.  He used great initiative throughout the battle and his work was invaluable “.
