RECOMMENDATION FOR AWARD OF MILITARY MEDAL
Date of Recommendation:- 28 November 1916
Action for which commended:-
“This N,C.O on 29 August 1916 was knocked down by concussion of a shell exploding and received a severe shock. In spite of this he continued his way to the gun and fired 29 rounds from an open position which was being heavily shelled by the enemy”.
(The Army Commander considered that this act did not quite reach standard required for immediate reward).
SECOND RECOMMENDATION FOR AWARD OF MILITARY MEDAL
Date of Recommendation :- 5 May 1917
Action for which commended:-
“Conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty on the morning of 3 May 1917 during the attack on BULLECOURT. He showed an absolute disregard for danger, working continuously for some hours under heavy shell and machine gun fire, in digging out men buried by force of explosions of Trench Mortar Ammunition, and in tending the wounded. He did not leave the position till all the wounded had been taken away. This Non Commissioned Officer has on previous occasions been brought to notice for his courageous work”.
This recommendation was signed by Major General William HOLMES, and the Medal presented by General BIRDWOOD on 14 November 1917.
