“This NCO is a member of the original Regiment, and has served continuously in Galliopoli, Sinai and Palestine. For the past five months his work has been of the highest order. He has at all times been most efficient in the field, and in Camp and bivouac. On the 2nd and 3rd May 1918, during the Turkish counter attack at Es Salt, he was in charge of bombs and ammunition in his post, and often exposed himself to much danger to keep his men supplied. When the Turks got to within a few yards of his position, he called on his men to charge, which they did, bombing the enemy to such effect that the latter retired, leaving many dead. Sgt FITZMAURICE work on the outpost and in the defence lines at Auja and Abu Tellul was excellent and on many occasions he has officially commanded his Troop in the absence of a Troop Officer”.
