” At BROODSEINDE RIDGE east of YPRES on the night of October 2nd, 2nd Lieuts. VOWELS and GUDGEON were in charge of a party burying cables beyond ANZAC RIDGE and so thoroughly did these officers handle the large working party that the work was done in record time although under heavy enemy shell fire the whole time.  On the night of 6th/7th October Lieuts. VOWELS & GUDGEON with 30 other ranks carried out a raid in conjunction with the 12th Battalion in CELTIC WOOD, East of YPRES, LIEUT. VOWELS being in charge of both 11th and 12th Battalion parties.  Owing to the previous thorough reconnaissance and the dash and leadership of these Officers over almost impassable ground the raid was a complete success, and without sustaining a casualty they inflicted heavy losses on the enemy and brought back 15 prisoners and one Machine Gun and gained much valuable information.  Throughout the wole of the operations 1st to 9th October , the example set by these Lieuts. was magnificent and they showed a high sense of devotion to duty “.
