MENTION IN DESPATCHES
“Sergeant Gwynne is deserving of the highest praise for his general good work but more especially for his most gallant action in going to the help of his troop officer, 2nd Lieutenant Martin, during the action at Maghdaba, on the 23rd December 1916, after the latter’s horse had been killed. Sergeant Gwynne was the embodiment of coolness and paid no heed whatever to his personal safety. His conduct was a splendid example to his men and he undoubtedly shared with 2nd Lieutenant Cox the honour of storming the enemy’s last redoubt. His conduct during the action at Maghdaba undoubtedly is deserving of recognition”.
AWARD OF DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL
Citation from Lieut-Col TODD (Commanding Officer, 10th Light Horse Regiment), reads:-
“This NCO who was with 2 Lieut Cox in the charge through the enemy’s southern redoubt showed conspicuous gallantry throughout the action. When 2 Lieut Martin’s horse was killed about 70 yards at rear of redoubt this NCO galloped up and assisted Martin until the arrival of 2 Lieut Cox with a spare horse where Martin was able to get to safety. During the whole time the three were subjected to a very heavy fire and it was very courageous and gallant of Gwynne to act as he did. He undoubtedly shared with 2 Lieut Cox in saving 2 Lieut Martin’s life and I therefore ask that his name be sent on for special recognition and reward”.
