DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL
Date of Recommendation : 20 September 1918
” For continuous good work during the period 25th February 1918 and 16th September 1918. By his courage and initiative , he has encouraged those under him, and has always imparted great confidence. On 4th July 1918 , near VILLERS BRETTONEUX, East of AMIENS , Corporal HALL was in charge of a mortar which was taking part in a preliminary bombardment. A Bomb was passed to him, and it was discovered just as he dropped it into the Gun, that the safety tape had come off the bomb. Fortunately some small particle of grit held the bomb from going right down, for a few seconds. Corporal HALL , with great presence of mind, put his hand down the barrel , pulled the bomb out, and threw it over the parapet , where it immediately exploded. Had the bomb become dislodged when he reached down for it, he and his two mates must have been killed. He undoubtedly saved three lives “.
