MILITARY CROSS RECOMMENDATIONS
( 1 )-” For Conspicuous Gallantry and Devotion to Duty at ROUGE CROIX , near CAESTRE , on the night of 16/17th May 1918. The Battery position was being shelled with 5.9’s and 4.2’s . A direct hit was obtained on the No. 6 Gun, completely destroying it. The camouflage caught fire , and the ammunition in the pit and dump adjoining, was also set alight. The flare thrown out, drew an increased rate of enemy fire. Lieut HEPPINGSTONE at once organized a party of men , and regardless of personal danger , from Enemy shells, which continued throughout, got the fire under control. He showed great courage and initiative ,and his act prevented the destruction of further ammunition and stores. The courage and devotion to duty of this Officer has , on more than one occasion previously , been brought before me “.
( 2 )- ” For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at PROYART on 23rd August 1918. The 102nd Battery was pushed up to a very forward position and at ZERO hour was subjected to a heavy barrage from guns of various calibres . Several men were wounded, including Lieut HEPPINGSTONE and another Officer. Notwithstanding his wound Lieut. HEPPINGSTONE continued to carry out his work throughout the operation, and was eventually evacuated when no longer able to hold out. Under this continual shell fire he passed from gun pit to gun pit showing an utter disregard for his own safety, and by his presence inspired his men to the extra efforts required of them. The fire of the Battery was maintained throughout . He showed wonderful courage and set a fine example of coolness and confidence to his men. He is not in possession of any decoration “.
