” On 29th September 1918, near BOSY, during the attack on the HINDENBURG LINE, this N.C.O was in charge of the advance party of the Brigade Signal Section. Owing to the vagueness of the situation and the scattering of his party by Machine Gun and artillery fire during the morning, his position was a most difficult one. Realising the importance of his job, he obtained what little information he could with regard to the disposition of units, replenished his supply of cable ( which had been lost ) by salvaging, and laid the necessary lines from Brigade Headquarters. He and one linesman, all that remained of the party , maintained these lines throughout the day and night, displaying most conspicuous bravery under heavy Machine Gun fire. He set an excellent example to the remainder of the Section “.
