” North of Pozieres . This N.C.O was in charge of  No. 12 Platoon and displayed real courage  and did exceptionally fine work. On the night of 9th August, 1916, the enemy’s position had been taken, he assisted in reconnoitering the ground worn, and in linking up with the units on the right and left. He again showed to great advantage on 12th August, 1916, when the section of trench for which he was responsible was being heavily shelled, by filling up the gaps  with sand bags and removing wounded to positions of comparative safety “.
