REPORTS OF SOLDIER’S DEATH

Informant –  MARSH, Pte. W, 7106 16th Battalion AIF  – ” I knew JOHANNESSEN well, being in the same unit. He was sitting outside his dugout during a bombardment at Hebuterne when he was hit by a shell and killed immediately.  I saw him after he was dead “.

 

Informant – HARRIS, Pte. Cromwell, 6468 – 16th Battalion AIF – ” JOHANNESEN and ELLINGWORTH were sitting together  on a bank when a large shell exploded within 5 yards and blew JOHANNESSEN’s left leg below the knee and shattered thigh.  He bled to death. We buried JOHANNESSEN with about 5 others in a quarry about 4oo yards  south of the graveyard at Hebuterne. A wooden cross will mark the spot “.
