MENTION IN DESPATCHES – 13/03/1919
“This N.C.O served in Gallipoli (6 months), Sinai, Palestine and Syria, and has always proved a most efficient soldier. Every action he has taken part in shows something to his credit. In the recent operations, he handled his troop most gallantly in the absence of his troop officer and at Jenin on September 20th, again at Benat Yakub on 27th, Gaza on September 29th and at Duhma on October 1st, his courage and devotion to duty were a fine example to his men. His work in the P.O.W Compound at Karkab was also of the highest order”.

AUTHOR NOTE
On the soldier’s service file there is an AIF Demobilization form signed at Cairo Egypt by “Jack” MATHIESON on 12 February 1919 in which he stated:- ” On discharge he wished to take up land at Wagin as a Farmer and would require Government assistance to achieve this outcome. He also stated that he wished to Marry”.
Unfortunately, his selection as one of OLDEN”S Men to successfully put down the Egyptian Uprising in March 1919 cost his life. (Another tragic outcome for one of our 10th Light Horsemen).
