REPORTS on SOLDIER’S DEATH

Informant – WILLIAMS, Cpl. James Norman, 1656- 11th Battalion AIF – ” MILLER was one of the Machine Gun detachment and was in a shell hole about 10 yards from our detachment. I saw a heavy shell explode close to MILLER’s detachment killing two and wounding two. I spoke to the wounded men who told me that MILLER had been killed. He was 5 feet 7 inches, fair, clean-shaven with sharp features”.

Informant – LONG, Lieut. A.J.- ” D ” Company 11th Battalion AIF – ” On this occasion we were subjected to  a very severe bombardment and many a good man was blown to fragments  and buried under tons of earth before dawn. I checked the few of us that remained and MILLER was found to be missing along with many others. The Army records no man as dead  until his body is found and buried. But I leave you to draw the obvious  conclusion from this, death in any case would have been instantaneous . This action occurred  in front of the Village of Pozieres”.
