23/11/1916- Letter from No. 5390 Pte. E.R. Mitchell 16th Battalion at Monte Video Camp Weymouth England addressed to the International Red Cross-  ” My brother No 2910 Pte. R.F. Mitchell 48th Battalion was reported missing August 8th 1916.  If  you have any later information will you please let me know “.

 

25/11/1916-  Reply to letter above  ” We have received your letter calling about your brother No. 2910 Pte. R.F. Mitchell and we are glad to be able to tell you that he is a Prisoner of War .  If you wish to write to him , he is allowed to have two letters and four post cards a month, you should address as above at Gefangenenlager Dulmen i Westf. 37th Coy Group 3. German & write British Prisoner of War  in top left hand corner.  We are glad to have been of  assistance to you in the matter.  When you are writing to him, it will be better to send the letter C/O us here,as if he were moved to another camp we are always early notified of the fact “.

 

18/10/1916- London-  Information received from Mrs Howlett, 1 Dale Road Gopel Vale London-   ” Missing 8/08/1916- Prisoner of War- Gef. Lager Dulmen i. Westf.37th Company Group 3 “.

 

26/10/1916- London- Refernce : J.W. Howlett, 2667, 48th Battalion, AIF, dated 14th October 1916- ” Missing August 8th 1916- He was taken prisoner in a German Trench at Pozieres on 6th August and sent a postcard to my mother from his Internment Camp telling her so, he was a mate of my brother who got killed.  Pte. Meree, 5470,  same Battalion  ( not in the list ) was captured same time and also sent her a postcard “.
