Date of Recommendation : 4 March 1918

” For conspicuous gallantry and great initiative near HOLLEBEKE on the night of 24th/25th January 1918, in the handling of a group of posts during a very determined attempt on the part of the enemy to obtain identification from our sector of the line.  The enemy put down a very heavy barrage cutting off all communications from all other groups and came over in strong force.  It was owing to his gallant organization before the raid and his very fine leadership during the raid that enabled him to beat off the enemy, inflicting heavy losses on them capturing two prisoners which enabled us to obtain a very valuable identification.  His behaviour throughout was a very fine example to all “.
