” For the very gallant and able manner in which he carried out his duties during operations near ZONNEBEKE on the 26th September 1917. On reaching our objective , he proceeded out under our barrage , with a small section of snipers , to cover consolidation, and during this time, he accounted for an entire gun crew at close quarters with his rifle. Hr remained at the edge of our barrage , keeping the enemy’s heads down until seriously wounded by a sniper, and while returning to our lines , assisted a wounded man to seek shelter. During the whole operation , his leadership and example were such as to inspire the greatest confidence in all men in his vicinity. He is strongly recommended for high distinction “.
