DETAILS OF SOLDIER’S DEATH

Informant – FARMER, B.H , 422, 11th Platoon, ” C ” Company, 28th Battalion – ” Height 5 feet 7 inches, fair,about 20. Single. Came from Western Australia.  He went over midnight of 28/07/1916 and about 1.00a.m. on 29/07/1916 he was hit by Machine Gun Bullet in the left forearm at Pozieres. I bound his arm up, stuck his rifle in ground  and put his puttees on his rifle so that he could be found. I had to go on, about an hour later I returned – I did not see the rifle or RAITT. Did not see him again. On enquiry at AIF Records  I was informed he was posted as Missing. For 4 days after the stunt, 20 of us were bringing in the wounded. I went over the ground where I left RAITT and could not find him. It is reasonable to presume he was covered over, or blown to pieces by shell fire. He was nearly done from loss of blood when I bound up his arm. He was my chum “.
