AUTHOR NOTES:
7th August 1915 – Charge at The Nek Walkers Ridge Gallipoli
Major John Burns SCOTT was the Commanding Officer of “C” Squadron of the 10th Light Horse Regiment who were the members of the fourth line committed to the famous bayonet charge at Walkers Ridge Gallipoli.
Following the obliteration of the first two lines of men from the 8th Light Horse Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel BRAZIER had sought cancellation of orders to continue the senseless charge from Brigadier General ANTILL ,who replied with”Push on” to carry out orders.
When BRAZIER returned to the front line trenches, Major SCOTT explained that he had just witnessed the third line of men (10th Light Horsemen from WA) similarly slaughtered by the enemy and that in his opinion the task they were set could not be achieved. BRAZIER again sought cancellation of orders.
During BRAZIER’s time away, SCOTT withheld his men from the charge and resulted in saving most of their lives accordingly. Most of these men were from”C” Squadron and partly from “B” Squadron..
