Date  of Recommendation : 24 September 1917

” For conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty.  At the attack on WESTHOEK  RIDGE on 20/09/1917, he was acting as runner for his Company Commander, and when his officer was wounded during the advance, he carried him on his back to the Dressing Station.  He returned to the line and worked as a stretcher bearer, doing most valuable work and setting a fine example to all by his cheery manner “.
