DETAILS OF DEATH
Witness – 52. BURROWS, Sgt. W , 16th Battalion ” B ” Company – ” After the charge on 2/5/1915 I saw WALKER lying wounded in the gully in front of Pope’s Hill. I went up and spoke to him. WALKER had previously been shot in the cheek in Monash Gully. When I spoke to him it was about 8.00 a.m on the 3rd May. Where he was lying he was quite safe and could not help being picked up if he lived. If he had died they would not have brought him in “.
Witness- 294- RICCY, Pte. L, 16th Battalion ” B ” Company, Stretcher Bearer – ” I found Private George WALKER ( an English chap ) lying dead in the back of Dead Man’s Gully about three days after the charge of 2nd May 1915. I took off his Disc and gave it to the Doctor. WALKER was buried afterwards just up the same gully near where he fell “.
Witness- 140- BRADLEY, Corpl. H.J.- 16th Battalion ” A ” Company – ” On the night of the 2nd to 3rd May WALKER went into action with us. I saw him between 3.00 and 4.30 a.m. just behind the firing line. WALKER said he had been down bandaging wounded all night and ” a man would go mad down there among all those groans”. Just then they called for ammunition on the left and WALKER and I and a few others did three or four trips with it, but on the fourth trip WALKER was hit and I saw him roll down the hill and did not see him again. WALKER was born in England and where he was hit was at Dead Man’s Ridge. WALKER was very brave that morning “.
