” At 11.15 P.M. on January 9th, 1918 a bomb was dropped from a hostile aeroplane on a salvage ammunition dump at ZUAVE siding near YPRES immediately causing a big explosion which resulted in about 100 casualties, of which between 40 & 50 were fatal. C.S.M. WALLACE together with Sgt. SPENCE & Spr. JACKSON ran immediately to the scene with all available dressings . They removed and dressed all the casualties then proceeded to help to extinguish the fire , risking the recurrence of explosions of the cordite. Their action throughout the whole time being a fine example of courage and devotion to duty “.
