Pte. James WHELAN was called to a Field General Court Martial in France on 24/07/1916- subsequently found Guilty of Drunkenness and sentenced to 42 Days by Major CUNNINGHAM.

On 13/08/1916, the following note has been added to the Soldier’s Service File :- ” On account of Private WHELAN’s Gallant Conduct in action on 28/29 July 1916 , the sentence has been remitted by Officer in Command 7th Brigade “.
