REPORTS OF SOLDIER’S DEATH

Informant – LEATHARD, Pte. A, 4842- 51st Battalion AIF – “On Sunday morning on 3rd September 1916 about 8.00 a.m a counter attack  was made by the Germans at a place called Mouquet Farm Somme. 3312. J. WOODHEAD was by my side when he was struck  with a bullet which went through his head killing him instantly. I helped another push WOODHEAD  out of the trench to make room. Soon after this 21 others  and myself were captured  and taken prisoners. He was an Englishman- his height being about 5 foot 7, clean shaven, rather dark, thickly built “.

Informant – WEAVER, Pte. C – 51st Battalion AIF – ” Height about 5  foot 5,  nuggety build, weighing between 11 and 12 stone, between the age of 40 to 50 years, he smoked a pipe and chewed a little and spoke as being once  a munition worker in Italy, I believe.  When he came to the 51st Battalion, I don’t exactly know, but he was in my Company, where he remained till the 3 September, 1916. I have every reason to believe that he is dead, for a bullet inflicted his skull right alongside me that Sunday morning, death I am quite sure  was only the matter of a few seconds. Shortly after this I was wounded  and as the Germans won the day , I am not in a position to state who, or where he is buried “.
