AWARDED  MILITARY  CROSS

Date of Recommendation  :  20 January 1919

” When his Battalion was engaged in active operations at  VERMAUD  ( N.W of St Quentin ) during the period 10th. to 30th September 1918 this Officer showed splendid  initiative.  On one occasion a party of the enemy had established a post in the Battalion Front Line Trench, Lieut. SALTER at once led a party of bombers from the support company forward and under heavy Machine Gun fire rushed the post capturing 2 Officers,  44 Other Ranks and 6 Machine Guns, restoring the line.  His coolness and steady leadership in a critical situation was an example to all.  ( This Officer’s services have only been brought to notice since the return of another  wounded Officer ) “.
