Informant – ROGERS, Pte. C S, 3303- 48th Battalion – ” ASHMORE was seen lying in a shell hole  with three other men at Pozieres , on August 7th. The others were got away safely by PTE. CLEMMO, who told me that Pte. ASHMORE was dead before he could be carried out of the hole and that the body  had to be left there “.


Informant – BILES, Pte. W- 2459, 48th Battalion AIF – ” We were in the same shell hole for about 26 hours, Private ASHMORE was hit in the groin with shrapnel and was bleeding very badly. When I crawled out of the hole he was almost dead and later a Corporal went to the place and he was dead. Private ASHMORE came from Western Australia  and was dark and tall “.
