16/05/1917- London- Quotation from letter written to the Soldier’s Mother by O.C. 48th Battalion A.I.F – ” Pte. HUGHES, John Arthur, 4293-  Reported Missing 11/04/1917-  Your son was in the engagement on the 11th of April when we attacked and broke through the Hindenburg Line.  He was seen by some of the men up to the time we were  forced to retire. The Germans outnumbered us and held strong position on the flanks. Your son did not return.  It is possible that he may be a prisoner , as the Germans captured a good number of the Australians engaged.  He is posted as missing .  I very much regret that I am unable to give you better news of him.  We lost many brave officers and men.  I lost my own Brother and Nephew , killed, so I can feel for you in your sorrow.  I hope he may prove to be a Prisoner “.
